I love the way climate scientists like to make predictions rather than measurements. Halfway through this year I read a report in the Adelaide Advertiser that 2007 was going to be the hottest year ever. Now Phil Jones of the University of East Anglia, one of the alarmists in the debate, has predicted in Oslo, which is about as far as you can get from Bali where the Son of Kyoto is starting to take shape, that 2007 will be a cooler year than 1998, and only the 6th hottest year ever.
I’m happy to wait until the figures are in to see what really has happened, but this looks like a pre-emptive strike. Get the prediction into the public sphere at a time when everyone is on pilgrimage to Bali, so no-one will notice. Then early next year, when the figure is actually known, you can say it is no big deal, and we were predicting this all along.
Bob Carter at JCU has been predicting that 1998 will be the peak of global warming for some years now. I reckon he’d have to be pretty lucky for this guess (because I don’t think it can really be more than a guess) to be true. So far his luck is holding.
He’s also got a YouTube hit on his hands. This video has so far had 41,735 views, and I gather there is interest from television stations in showing it as a documentary. Perhaps it could be retitled “Real inconvenient truths”?

10 years of static global temperature?

What can I say Graham?I challenged the CO2 debate on what I had learned from my own school science experience. The fossil fuels we now burn are the result of animals and plants taking the sun’s energy and separating carbon from oxygen.During the Carboniferous Period life thrived, yet the climate change theologists take a brief history in our climatic history and apply a theory of doom based on worst case scenarios. This is not science.
You are a Climate Change heretic Graham Young, and Bob Brown,Peter Garrett and the Greens will have you inturned in their chasm of silence should you ever have the audacity to again, question their authority.
Bob Carter takes a longer look at our climatic history, but this is not trendy or scarey enough for our drama queens of the media to ectch out a living on the back of our fears.
I’m really disappointed with the Coalition who have buckled to the tears of the bleeding heart trendy left.
Labor signing Kyoto was not a courageous or insightful intellectual experience. It was the only feel good lever Labor could pull, without suffering the consequences of their own incompetence.

I’m not prepared to wait until the figures are in, and it is a good thing that the policy makers are not waiting either.
If you want to take a big picture, geological time span view of the issue of global warming then whatever is happening now is just a slight upward blip in a long term cooling trend.
The policy makers have correctly said, there is evidence of some global warming, it may be a trend, but the worst case scenario will occur if global warming is true, and we do not prepare for it.
